Kelsey and Jason | A Wedding Story | Las Vegas

March 30th, 2011

When you think of Vegas, you think glitz. The bright lights of the Strip, the colorful concoctions of the slot machines. But this Vegas story is a quieter one. It happened about 20-30 minutes northwest of the Strip, away from the masses and toward the beautiful mountains. Here in Lakeside Chapel, Kelsey and Jason saw each other for a First Look in a beautiful garden. Then as the sun began to set, they pledged their love underneath a trellised awning kissed by the setting sun.

It was a small ceremony with their families and friends, and I was blessed to have been there to photograph these special moments. Blessed, too, for having my friend, Laurie Perez, come as my second shooter all the way from Houston, and some of her images are mixed into the storyboards below. I hope you enjoy looking at these memories as much as we enjoyed photographing them!

What happens in Vegas…so the saying goes | A wedding story teaser

March 9th, 2011

For my first trip to Vegas, I thought I did pretty well: I won $50 and lost $25 on Deal or No Deal slot machines. I saw lions in MGM Grand, saw the dancing waters of Bellagio, walked inside Mandalay Bay, drank Frozen Hot Chocolate in Kim Kardashian’s candy store, and brushed elbows with tourists [...]

For my first trip to Vegas, I thought I did pretty well: I won $50 and lost $25 on Deal or No Deal slot machines. I saw lions in MGM Grand, saw the dancing waters of Bellagio, walked inside Mandalay Bay, drank Frozen Hot Chocolate in Kim Kardashian’s candy store, and brushed elbows with tourists from around the country.

And then there was this beautiful wedding.

More pretty pictures to come later. This is just to whet your appetite. For now, I leave you with this:

Kris and Laurie pose under the Las Vegas sign

PS. We stayed in the Hilton Vacation Suites in the north side of the Strip. If you’re a Vegas newb like Laurie and I, the north side is not the most exciting spot, but the Tram is about a 5 minute walk next door and it will take you down the Strip for far less than those taxis will.

PPS. Wear your most comfortable pair of shoes. See above photo for Exhibit A.

unguarded moments | houston wedding photographer

August 19th, 2010

August 14th was a very big day for my friend Laurie (of Laurie Perez Photography). August 14th was a very big day for my friend Laurie (of Laurie Perez Photography). While Lisa, her little sister, tied the knot with Adrian, Laurie was in full photographer mode, armed with her hulking camera(s) and lens combos and no less than two quantum flashes and a couple of assistants. She meant business, and naturally, I came to shoot prepared to capture the wedding story, but also Laurie’s very own tearful moments. It was beautiful to watch her transfixed, the camera in her hand forgotten, as she gazed at her dad and Lisa. We photographers have unguarded moments too, and I’m glad I was able to capture some of hers.

The night was very bittersweet; not just about her baby sister “leaving the nest,” but also because their father had for the past year been in and out of the hospital fighting cancer. During his speech, Mr. Perez was both funny and self deprecating, but as he closed with a passionate plea for everyone to “please pray for [him],” I felt my own eyes water and had the most intense desire to call my own dad just to say hello and hear his voice.

But with tears came laughter, and lots of salsa and meringue. The reception was a blast, and I finally got to fulfill my very own desire to tear up the macarena. In fact, I don’t think the macarena will ever be the same again…

I do so hope you enjoy this little peek from last Saturday.

xoxo
Kris

Dear readers: I apologize for not being a more prolific blogger. Currently, I am getting ready to pack for my trip to NYC on Wednesday – about which I’m SUPER (feels-like-I’ve-had-too-much-caffeine) EXCITED – and had just enough time to process this set.

Not a lot of story telling here. I just wanted to post a few of my favorites from the weekend I second shot for David of D. Jones Photography, who’s absolutely amazing in action. I remember the groom say to me, “I don’t know what happened: it went so fast – it was awesome,” when talking about David taking the formals before the ceremony while I was shooting some candids. So if you’d like to see more of the photos from this wedding, and David’s photographs (with a couple of photos from yours truly), you can find them here on his blog post.

This photo of the bride’s shoes on the left was sheer stroke of genius, in my totally unbiased opinion. Two days before the wedding, I told Adam that I needed a key chain. A very specific one: the kind that had a latch on one end. Little did I know I was going to use it as a shoe chain! You can’t see it on the photo, but the shoes’ heels are attached into the chain right next to my car keys. The latch I then hooked onto some kind of chicken coop wire thingy. Genius, I tell you.

This is the groom pinning the buttonniere on his dad’s lapel. I really need to learn how to do that; it’s a handy skill. Specially these days :)

That’s all for now! Right now I’ve got NYC on my mind. It’s been years, way too long since I’ve been back home.

Kelly Niemann didn’t prepare me for how crazy this gig was going to be. Crazy FUN, that is. When she asked me to be her second shooter, I thought about the 9 hours of driving from Houston to Mission, TX. I thought about Mexico being a few miles away. I thought about the Bebe outlet mall. “Excited” would have been an understatement. But all that paled beside the sheer awesomeness of the wedding day.

I met Amanda during her Bridal Session with Kelly late last year. I didn’t think she could look more beautiful than during that shoot, but there’s just that *something* about one’s wedding that brings a radiance to one’s face. You’re probably thinking, um, dur, that something is LOVE. And I totally agree!

These guys were party animals! I don’t know if you can tell, but the reception was quite frenetic. I LOVED it! I kept thinking, now this is my kind of parrrrty!

Believe it or not, I processed all but the last two of these images within the week we got back to Houston from Mission. I just waited to post the photos. Hope you like em :)

PS. Yes, we dipped into Mexico. And all I brought back is a bottle of Coke. The cola, mmk.

vows, beads and happiness: a new orleans wedding

February 25th, 2010

As a Houston portrait and boudoir photographer, I don’t get to travel outside too often. So when Jessica Vallecorsa of JVallecorsa Photography asked me to come second shoot in New Orleans for her beautiful couple late last year, a quick slideshow of happy memories in the French Quarter from my sailor days sparked brightly in my mind’s eye. I, of course, speedily said yes. It was actually more like, “YES! YES yes yes YES!”

So the two of us packed our bags into her souped up red mini cooper and trekked eastward. What a little tart her mini cooper was, with its sparkling chrome accents and painted rear-view mirrors! The truckers couldn’t help but honk at this beauty. Repeatedly. I’m hoping one year I’ll be so good, Santa would bring me a mini cooper for Christmas.

And even though we met some traffic on the way there, it wasn’t enough to dampen our spirits. We were rearing to go, batteries charged and energized both literally and metaphorically, when we met Lisa and Jay the next day in their separate hotel rooms. Actually, Jay was already dressed to the nines in his military uniform before I got there, anxiously waiting with his best man for Lisa to get ready. So I didn’t get any of his “getting ready” shots, but that’s alright. Here are some of my favorites:

Our first view of Oak Alley Plantation, where the ceremony was to be held, was breath-taking. The first thing that came to mind was Gone With the Wind’s Tara, Scarlett O’Hara’s majestic home. The ceremony was held under the trailing branches of these oak trees, presided over by Marie, our Justice of the Peace.

When the ceremony finished, we toured the grounds and got some amazing “Mr. and Mrs.” photos. We kept it fun and romantic.

*So* Gone With the Wind!

I searched back into my early high school days for some inspiration for this next shot: I remembered reading a romance novel with something similar on the cover. You like?

Back into the limo and on our way to the French Quarter. I couldn’t help but notice that they were not messing around with cutting the cake! That knife meant business.

Walking down Bourbon Street, we met all sorts of  fabulous characters.

The couple specifically wanted some gris-gris from Madame Laveau’s House of Voodoo. For good luck!

Honestly, it was so much fun being there, being a part of Lisa and Jay’s life as it unfolded in the most special day of their lives. Thank you Jess for asking me to shoot with you. I will definitely always remember this non-traditional New Orleans wedding.

Back in January, Laurie;  asked me if I wanted to second shoot for her wedding this past weekend. I said, “Are you crazy? Of course!” Well, okay, I guess that’s what I said in my head. But what came out of my mouth was a more sedate, “Sure, let me check my calendar.”

If you’ve been following my blog (or in this case, my old blog), you’d understand how I treasure every opportunity to shoot a wedding. I love love LOVE portraits and boudoir, but there’s something about weddings that keep you on edge. Keeps you on your toes. Makes sure you stay sharp. And for some reason… I crave that. (See masochism.)

I remember when I walked into the room where Austin was getting ready at the Doubletree hotel in downtown Houston, he was jittery and pale, and not even the youtube video on the laptop was enough to get him to tie his bow tie correctly. “Do you know how to do this?” he asked me. Me, the despair of womanhood, who can’t cook for my life but who can braid and solder wires like a champ. Luckily, his friends came to the rescue, fetched one of the bridesmaids who then ironed out the situ really quickly. We even had time to go to Sam Houston Park (where the ceremony was held) before the ceremony started and get some one-on-one with the groomsmen.

Watching Austin transform when Sally came down the aisle, it reminded me so much of what I love about weddings. While everyone looks at the bride, I look at the groom. The sweetness in the grooms’ faces really gives me that “Awwww” moment. Austin was smiling joyfully, and Sally was both beautiful and graceful, with that look in her eyes that was specially for the man she loved. Their ceremony slipped from the traditional when their minister called on their friends and asked some questions to tease the couple with. There was so much laughter, and I felt so privileged to have been there. Thanks, Laurie!

The reception was held at Cordua: Artista just a few blocks away from Sam Houston Park. The decor was beautiful and the food absolutely delicious. You’ve never had tres leches as good. Trust me.

;

And then just for fun, the faces behind Laurie Perez Photography, Laurie and her husband Felix. Looking smokin’ hot, if I may say so myself. It should be illegal to look this good while working.
