Kelsey and Jason | A Wedding Story | Las Vegas

March 30th, 2011

When you think of Vegas, you think glitz. The bright lights of the Strip, the colorful concoctions of the slot machines. But this Vegas story is a quieter one. It happened about 20-30 minutes northwest of the Strip, away from the masses and toward the beautiful mountains. Here in Lakeside Chapel, Kelsey and Jason saw each other for a First Look in a beautiful garden. Then as the sun began to set, they pledged their love underneath a trellised awning kissed by the setting sun.

It was a small ceremony with their families and friends, and I was blessed to have been there to photograph these special moments. Blessed, too, for having my friend, Laurie Perez, come as my second shooter all the way from Houston, and some of her images are mixed into the storyboards below. I hope you enjoy looking at these memories as much as we enjoyed photographing them!

What happens in Vegas…so the saying goes | A wedding story teaser

March 9th, 2011

For my first trip to Vegas, I thought I did pretty well: I won $50 and lost $25 on Deal or No Deal slot machines. I saw lions in MGM Grand, saw the dancing waters of Bellagio, walked inside Mandalay Bay, drank Frozen Hot Chocolate in Kim Kardashian’s candy store, and brushed elbows with tourists [...]

I saw lions in MGM Grand, saw the dancing waters of Bellagio, walked inside Mandalay Bay, drank Frozen Hot Chocolate in Kim Kardashian’s candy store, and brushed elbows with tourists from around the country.

And then there was this beautiful wedding.

More pretty pictures to come later. This is just to whet your appetite. For now, I leave you with this:

Kris and Laurie pose under the Las Vegas sign

PS. We stayed in the Hilton Vacation Suites in the north side of the Strip. If you’re a Vegas newb like Laurie and I, the north side is not the most exciting spot, but the Tram is about a 5 minute walk next door and it will take you down the Strip for far less than those taxis will.

PPS. Wear your most comfortable pair of shoes. See above photo for Exhibit A.

Just wanted to upload this before I went to bed. Today was windy, spotty and trees are in hibernation for the Houston winter. But cheers to tenacious photographers who will brave the wild for fabulous photographs… like me and Laurie Perez xoxo, Kris PS. 1) Super cool location: Haak Vineyards in Santa Fe. Check.
2) A couple so totally in love that it was such a pleasure to photograph them. Check.
3) Being able, at the same time, to assist the super fabulous and talented Laurie Perez. Double check!
4) The most delicious light from my newly acquired Elinchrom Quadra. Check CHECK CHECK!

Enough said or I will wax poetic about my Quadras. Onto the photographs! (Please click on the photo for a bigger resolution!)

PS. Mirabel and Marcello are getting married in two weeks at The Bell Tower, and Laurie (and I!) are going to be photographing that as well. I can’t wait!
PPS. Quadras really, really, really rock.

karie kisses her groom | houston wedding photographer

October 12th, 2010

“Well, fiddle dee dee,” I said to Laurie Perez a few months ago, using my best Scarlet O’Hara imitation. The hour long drive to Karie’s engagement session had finally ended, and a gorgeous first view of House Plantation had just revealed itself. Can you imagine how much more beautifully decorated this 1890s restored mansion was [...]

“Well, fiddle dee dee,” I said to Laurie Perez a few months ago, using my best Scarlet O’Hara imitation. The hour long drive to Karie’s engagement session had finally ended, and a gorgeous first view of House Plantation had just revealed itself. Can you imagine how much more beautifully decorated this 1890s restored mansion was during Karie’s wedding?

On October 9th, Karie and Bryan said their vows under the white awing of its covered patio. What started with preparations early in the day culminated with a kiss sealed in front of the setting sun.

I hope you enjoy this visual document of their journey as much as I enjoyed shooting it with Laurie. Thanks once again for the opportunity, friend :-)

xoxo,
Kris

If you’ve been reading my blog recently, you’d think I’m a wedding photographer *wink*. So many weddings! Once again, I thank Laurie Perez for having me shoot with her on this drizzly July day. Our styles complement each other so well, and if that piqued your curiosity, click her link and see her work :)

unguarded moments | houston wedding photographer

August 19th, 2010

August 14th was a very big day for my friend Laurie (of Laurie Perez Photography). While Lisa, her little sister, tied the knot with Adrian, Laurie was in full photographer mode, armed with her hulking camera(s) and lens combos and no less than two quantum flashes and a couple of assistants. She meant business, and naturally, I came to shoot prepared to capture the wedding story, but also Laurie’s very own tearful moments. It was beautiful to watch her transfixed, the camera in her hand forgotten, as she gazed at her dad and Lisa. We photographers have unguarded moments too, and I’m glad I was able to capture some of hers.

The night was very bittersweet; not just about her baby sister “leaving the nest,” but also because their father had for the past year been in and out of the hospital fighting cancer. During his speech, Mr. Perez was both funny and self deprecating, but as he closed with a passionate plea for everyone to “please pray for [him],” I felt my own eyes water and had the most intense desire to call my own dad just to say hello and hear his voice.

But with tears came laughter, and lots of salsa and meringue. The reception was a blast, and I finally got to fulfill my very own desire to tear up the macarena. In fact, I don’t think the macarena will ever be the same again…

I do so hope you enjoy this little peek from last Saturday.

xoxo
Kris

There is something both sad and full of hope about this symbolic “giving” of the daughter’s hand to her husband.
