Tips for looking fabulous for your photo shoot | Houston portrait photographer

A MUA adds the finishing touches to Kelly's face for her big day.

As a portrait photographer, one of the things I tell my clients during our consultation is to consider having their make-up professionally applied for their session. I then provide them a list of recommended make-up artists because let’s face it, Houston can get really muggy, and make-up artists use professional strength make-up that pretty much defies the weather. They also make sure that our skin looks smooth and flawless, and the condition of your skin is super important to the final look of your images. Photoshop is not the answer that everyone thinks it is. Ever seen those photos where the subject’s skin looks way over smoothed, kind of shiny and looks like plastic? Having someone apply your foundation helps make sure we don’t have spotty areas, which will benefit the retouching process and making your skin look like…well, skin.

But if you decide to skip the MUA, here are some tips for you:

  • If you use liquid foundation, apply it first with a flat foundation brush in sweeping strokes. Then use a stippling brush in circular motion over the foundation to make sure it sets into your pores. This will also get rid of any lines the flat brush had left behind. Don’t forget to blend to your hair line. If possible, have a second pair of eyes go over your foundation application.
  • Use a more liquid-like concealer under your eyes, but use a thicker, chalkier concealer for the rest of your face.
  • Set the foundation with a translucent powder. You can also use an Evian hydrating mist instead. This is also great for freshening up limping hair.
  • Fake eyelashes are your friend. They make your eyes look bigger and really glam up your gaze. If you’re having a tough time putting them on, fold the eye lash strip around your finger to bend the strip if it is too straight. Don’t forget to cut the ends to fit the length of your eyes!
  • Applying some bronzer over your foundation under the blush will help define your bone structure. Turn yourself so that the right side of your profile faces the mirror. Then with one loose stroke, apply the bronzer on your forehead down to your cheek bone, then down your jawline to your chin as if you’re stroking a 3 on your face. Then do the same on the left side of your face.
  • Bring some touch up makeup for your session! Having translucent powder, mascara, blush and lipstick handy will keep your make-up looking fresh.

I’m no MUA or make-up expert, but this is just some solid rudimentary steps I have used myself. Well, since the time I was allowed to use make-up by my parents anyway. Do you have some tips you’d like to share?

Love is love! | Houston Portrait Photographer

March 14th, 2012

How do you pose older couples? I see this asked a lot. Actually, for me, older couples are easier to photograph than their younger counterparts. They relax a lot quicker and are usually more comfortable with each other. Those who have been together for very long have a rich depth to their relationships that easily translates through the lens.

If, however, you are photographing a couple who is newly married, just pose them like you would normally pose your younger clients. Make sure you pay attention to how you’re posing their body language and just keep it fun and light hearted, and most of all show their connection. Show their love for each other and your photos will be keepers. It doesn’t matter what age, love is love :-)

Don’t forget the sunshine.

March 10th, 2012

It’s been really muggy and rainy in Houston. Totally the opposite of last year’s drought. In fact, there are brown rings on my semi grassy lawn caused by too much precipitation. remember the sunshine

It’s been really muggy and rainy in Houston. Totally the opposite of last year’s drought. In fact, there are brown rings on my semi grassy lawn caused by too much precipitation. It looks a little bit like the alien symbols in M. Night Shyamalan’s movie Signs.

This new year has been full of events for me. Some personal, but lots of work related ones. So I apologize for not being more prolific with my blog. I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve spent in front of the computer lately, haunched while editing or designing some graphic, eating left over Chinese. Before I know it, it’s 5AM and I still have some school work to do.

There’s a window behind my seat, curtains drawn so the light wouldn’t affect my monitor screen. Every now and then I get up and look out to enjoy the rain. Not the mugginess, never that. Although a few of my Houstonian girl friends are quite sure the humidity keeps our skin looking young from all the moisture – so I guess that’s a positive, even if my hair is crying from its constant state of bloated-ness.

I can’t wait for the sun to come back. This time I will make sure to take the time and enjoy being outside and just…BEING. Sometimes I forget to enjoy just being alive, and that’s a shame. I lost my aunt in late December last year and her husband, my uncle, passed away this January. There’s nothing like your loved one’s passing that makes you really grasp just how tenuous life is.

Cici Gets Baptized | Houston Family Photographer

September 23rd, 2011

Next to the towering stand for the holy water, little Cici looked curiously at her family as the other kids dipped their hands into the bowl. “She will not remember this day,” the pastor told them solemnly, “so it is your job to remind her. To see this for her so that you can tell her when she is older.”

The children giggled, the adults smiled at each other, and it warmed my heart to be there and be a part of something that helped strengthen the strands holding this family together. Lots of love goes out to Meagan as well, for being such a wonderful assistant.

It’s haute in Houston | Houston Photographer | A senior styled photo shoot

August 19th, 2011

A record breaking 18 straight days of over 100 degrees has settled upon Houston. It’s hot. It’s humid. In one such day, me, the beautiful Amy, and my assistant du jour, Debra, drove to the north side of Houston for a senior styled photo session. Sure it was hot, but with a sprinkle of fashion and a whole lot of fun, we got these awesome shots!

Sailor Moon Love | A personal project

June 10th, 2011

When I was in junior high, I used to wake up at 6AM and sneak into the living room so I could turn on the TV and watch Sailor Moon. My parents were very strict, and 6AM was definitely *not* the time to watch TV. Never mind that I had to get ready for school [...]

When I was in junior high, I used to wake up at 6AM and sneak into the living room so I could turn on the TV and watch Sailor Moon. My parents were very strict, and 6AM was definitely *not* the time to watch TV. Never mind that I had to get ready for school in 30 minutes. But being the die hard fan that I was (and still am), I did it anyway and darn the consequences. I had to see Serena fight the evil horde and become Sailor Moon; I had to know if Tuxedo Mask was really Darian, and even more important than the battle between good and evil, could their love possibly blossom…?

Other than Disney’s the Little Mermaid, Sailor Moon had captured my young imagination like no other. (And no, Sailor Moon had nothing to do with my eventually becoming an actual sailor in the US. Navy…That was Top Gun and a whole ‘nother story…) Of course, I couldn’t resist the temptation. When my Quadra lights came in the mail last year, the first thing I did was call my friend Laurie and ask her to step up to be the super hero I knew she was. And if you’re wondering: yes, I did have a Sailor Moon suit in my closet. The yellow wig too. We’re all allowed some vices :-)

Laurie gets a 10 for being so ridiculously cute.

We didn’t encounter any bad guys during the shoot, and honestly, the only martial arts I know is from watching Ip Man, but we did kick butt in the fun department. Special shout out to our friend Ali. I couldn’t have done it without her help with the Quadra lights!

Kelsey and Jason | A Wedding Story | Las Vegas

When you think of Vegas, you think glitz. The bright lights of the Strip, the colorful concoctions of the slot machines. But this Vegas story is a quieter one. It happened about 20-30 minutes northwest of the Strip, away from the masses and toward the beautiful mountains. Here in Lakeside Chapel, Kelsey and Jason saw each other for a First Look in a beautiful garden. Then as the sun began to set, they pledged their love underneath a trellised awning kissed by the setting sun.

It was a small ceremony with their families and friends, and I was blessed to have been there to photograph these special moments. Blessed, too, for having my friend, Laurie Perez, come as my second shooter all the way from Houston, and some of her images are mixed into the storyboards below. I hope you enjoy looking at these memories as much as we enjoyed photographing them!

The Marine Gets the Girl | Operation Love Reunited

March 21st, 2011

So imagine this: a Parisian restaurant in a make-believe 1940s. A Marine enters and sees a beautiful girl delicately sipping her coffee in front of a window. A ray of sunlight shines on her black hair and lights up the flower by her ear. He is captivated by her. She looks up; their eyes meet. [...]

Ok, so Daniel Steele I am not, and we were actually shooting in a cafe in Pearland. But the romance? No, I didn’t make that up.

Operation Love Reunited, oplove/

Seriously, don’t they just put a goofy smile on your face? Helen and Matt still have that newlywed glow, even though they’ve been married some time.

We switched it up a little and headed to a patch of green nearby. It was very windy, but thanks to Laurie Perez for donating her time to be my super cool, voice operated boom arm and stand holder for the day; we got some amazing shots in the field.

Operation Love Reunited, oplove

Their album just came in, and I’m excited to be sending it to Matt in his duty station in the Pacific. Being a part of Operation: Love Reunited lets me meet families like Helen and Matt, and help them stay connected during their long separations by donating my time, talent, and a beautiful album that they can treasure for years to come.

PS. Matt went to Japan a few days after their session with me. Thankfully, he is ok and was not very much affected by the natural disaster in the area. Let us pray for the well being of other people as well. A couple of nights ago, the news said that the effect was felt as far as Hawaii and it was suffering from terrible flooding.

PPPS. Big thanks go out to Mimi’s Cafe in Pearland for letting us use their gorgeous interior for our shoot. You guys rock, and your food is delicious too!

What happens in Vegas…so the saying goes | A wedding story teaser

March 9th, 2011

For my first trip to Vegas, I thought I did pretty well: I won $50 and lost $25 on Deal or No Deal slot machines. I saw lions in MGM Grand, saw the dancing waters of Bellagio, walked inside Mandalay Bay, drank Frozen Hot Chocolate in Kim Kardashian’s candy store, and brushed elbows with tourists from around the country.

And then there was this beautiful wedding.

More pretty pictures to come later. This is just to whet your appetite. For now, I leave you with this:

Kris and Laurie pose under the Las Vegas sign

PS. We stayed in the Hilton Vacation Suites in the north side of the Strip. If you’re a Vegas newb like Laurie and I, the north side is not the most exciting spot, but the Tram is about a 5 minute walk next door and it will take you down the Strip for far less than those taxis will.

PPS. Wear your most comfortable pair of shoes. See above photo for Exhibit A.
